Help Matt Thomas Fight for His Health & His Future In April, our lives were turned upside down when Matt Thomas — my son’s father — was diagnosed with endocarditis, a rare and devastating heart infection. Typically, this condition is seen in IV drug users, but Matt has never been an addict, which makes his case extremely rare and heartbreaking. On April 19th, Matt collapsed while driving and crashed head-on into a building. He was rushed to the ICU and placed in a coma for nearly a month. The infection did not respond to the first rounds of medication, and doctors weren’t sure if he would survive. Seeing him lying there — on a ventilator, hooked up to a heart machine, with tubes everywhere — was horrifically painful to witness. Minute by minute, day by day, Matt fought back. After 37 days in the ICU, he finally began to respond to treatment. The hardest part was over, but the battle wasn’t finished. He spent the next 19 days in a rehabilitation center, relearning the most basic things we all take for granted: how to walk, talk, and even use his hands again. Barely a week or two after leaving rehab, Matt — determined to provide for his boys — pushed himself to return to work. Soon after, he was rushed back to the hospital. And even then, he went back again as soon as he could. Instead of being met with compassion, he was fired — after dedicating more than five years to his company, working six days a week since day one. Through it all, Matt’s greatest motivation has been his children. He is a devoted father who lights up when he is with his boys. They are his world, and he has fought with everything he has to be here for them — to watch them grow, guide them, and continue being the loving, hands-on dad they know and need. Losing his health, his independence, and his job has been crushing, but his love for his sons keeps him going. Matt is a proud, hardworking man who has always been the first to help others and has never asked for anything in return. But now, for the first time, he is allowing me to create this fundraiser because he knows he must focus on recovery — to heal, rebuild, and be here as long as possible for his boys.
